Landulph Climate Group

Landulph Parish Council supports Cornwall Council’s initiative to declare a joint Climate and Ecological Emergency. The commitment is to become carbon neutral by 2030 and to protect, conserve and grow Cornwall’s eco-systems to ensure a fully sustainable low carbon future for Cornwall. The Landulph Climate Group is a Working Group of the Parish Council consisting of Councillors and Parishioners. It aims to encourage individuals to make changes to reduce their impact on the environment.  The latest statement of intent, terms of reference and official reports can be found at on the Parish Council website.  The Climate Group can be contacted at: LCG@landulphparishcouncil.gov.uk.

In January 2024, we simplified our name to Landulph Climate Group (LCG for short), mainly to stop us getting in a muddle over too many initials.  The new name also aligns us with our Instagram account (landulphclimategroup) and reflects our wider remit that includes both the Climate and Ecological Emergency declared by Cornwall Council.  Thanks to Gill Mannings Cox, we also have a lovely new logo.

Review of Progress 2021

The Climate Action group has celebrated its first year, one of intense activity. Set up by the Parish Council in response to the County Council's declaration of a climate emergency, it is made up of a mix of Parish Councillors and interested parishioners. The Group has produced regular articles for the Newsletter and webpage and manned a stall at the Landulph Celebrates day and the Christmas Craft Show. The group has highlighted ways in which we can all make a difference to climate change. It has also conducted a survey of parishioners concerns over climate change, the results of which are shown below.

Two members of the group plus myself in my capacity as a County Councillor also attend the recently formed Cornwall Gateway Climate Change Working Group to share ideas with other town and parish council groups. We were proud to be seen as being pro-active in our drive to help to reduce the impact of climate change.

Biodiversity is vital to sustaining our beautiful area of outstanding natural beauty. The community is very lucky to have many unsung heroes who, without being asked, just quietly get on and 'do stuff' to look after our environment; from litter picking (on land and on water) maintaining areas of green space, including the church yard, to planting wild flower plugs at Penyoke.

We hope year two will be a busy year and that we can continue to generate enthusiasm and support to protect our amazing world - especially this little corner of it.

Councillor Martin Worth, Chair of LCG

Questionnaire Responses

During the summer 2021, LCG asked the parish about climate change. 37 people responded and thought climate change was concerning but were worried about different issues.

There were some very interesting comments on the questionnaire. Overall opinion was divided between we, in Landulph Parish, can make a difference but we need action not words and this is really a problem for the government and world leaders. The LCG aims to encourage individuals to make changes to reduce their impact on the environment.

Strategic Intent and Progress 2023/24

In April 2023, LPCAG reevaluated our priorities for the next year - we all agreed that our priorities of Biodiversity and Transport would continue for another year with Biodiversity renamed to Nature Recovery as this more accurately reflects what we want to achieve.  Other topic headings include Energy, Youth Engagement, Local Community and Networking.  We will maintain Recycling with a view to prioritising this topic in 2024 to coincide with changes in Cornwall County Council’s waste management services. The chart below illustrates the activities we have completed so far this year against our priorities:

In terms of nature recovery we have completed:

  • Community Orchard Inaugural Meeting
  • Coombe Corner: Parish Newsletter article
  • Winter talk: Nature recovery in Landulph's changing climate
  • Winter talk: Food for Thought
  • Ponds make me happy: Parish newsletter article
  • Visit to Earth Barton and Tim Willians with SEA
  • Visit to Tom Derham's Farm
  • School environment visit
  • Tamar Valley Newsletter Article

In terms of transport we have completed:

  • Methane transport: Visit from Jason Gallop, CORMAC
  • Hopper Bus: regular shop transport and community social events
  • Go Cornwall bus service (452 and 454)
  • We have also purchased a thermal imaging camera and written a Parish Newsletter article about it as part of our energy priority.
  • We have established an Instagram presence as part of local community and networking.
